POETRY:
In my views poetry is the expression of the feelings in the format of words, as a musician expresses in the format of tune, and a painter in the format of a drawing. In music the melody comes only if the tune is based on some format, mere beating or playing of an instrument does not produce a melodious sound as in the painting mere throwing colors on the canvas gives no beauty. Same as, in the poetry the charm and beauty of poem comes if it is based on some format, mere writing your feelings on paper in some words is not a poetry. Such types of poetry could be charming only for the writer himself but not for others. In this page the basic types of poetry are written and their further rules are discussed on page "Rules of classical poetry"
Types of shairy
1. Shair :
(pl. ashaar) A Shair (sher) is usually two lined couplet it is complete in expression in itself, both lines should be in the same beher. The radif and kafiya may or may not be there. Four lined piece of shair is called kat'aa
2. Ghazal:
A ghazal is very particular in its format, and rules of radif, kafiya, and beher are very strictly followed. A ghazal is made of individual shers, In other words it is a collection of 7-12 shers based on same rule of beher, radif, and kaafiya.
3. Nazm :
It is very different in its format, it is like kavita of hindi poetry. Rules of radif, kafiya, are very much flexible. So, It is almost very simple to write a nazm. Nazm expresses a single idea in poetic form. It does not contain shairs.
3. Nagma or Song :
It is commonly known as Song or Geet. It is for specially singing purpose so it is somewhat flexible in radif, and kafiya but rules of beher are very strictly followed otherwise it cannot be sung. There is no fixed format of songs, different songs are written in different format.
There are also some other formats or types of shaireis viz. Kasida, Naat, Rubaii, Hamd, etc. Those are not explained.
